MONOBOOK
utilitarian reading chair
SPRING 2023
BALTIC BIRCH PLYWOOD - WALNUT - SANDALWOOD
18.5” x 17” x 19.5”
Made for those brief moments of relaxation, the MonoBook offers a chance to unwind through a designated space for reading. Both a bookshelf and a chair in one, the MonoBook allows for a retractable backing set at an optimal 105 degrees that seamlessly tucks away when not in use. The seating-for-one allows for a more intimate setting– designed with utilitarian design principles in mind, the MonoBook seeks to create lasting habits and enlightened minds.
SCALE MODELS
preliminary angle study of form and seat backing utility
I loved the cube geometry and knew it was the direction I wanted to go into for this chair. I wanted to design around this form, adding elements that were neatly contained within cubic dimensions while also adhering to functionalism. Angle studies were done in section of my fabrication timeline, as I had to find the perfect balance between storage space preservation and enough weight support for the seating element.
RENDERINGS

Initially in my design process, I imagined this as a chair substitute within learning environments such as elementary schools and universities. Instead of a traditional library, a room full of these chairs with curated books of various genres could serve as personal zones of analog entertainment. In this situation, these chairs would have a general plastic assembly of HDPE, with birch plywood as the retractable backing.
